Dordt defeats Presentation 59-58
HOW IT HAPPENED
A basket with less than ten seconds left by Shae Pollema pushed the Dordt Defenders to a one point win over Presentation in non-conference basketball in a classic hosted by Northwestern in Orange City.
The Defenders scored first on a three-point basket by Kim Kroeze but the Saints scored the next 14 points and led 19-10 at the end of the first quarter.
Presentation added to the lead and got up 28-12 with 7:34 left in the first half and the difference was still 15 at 30-15 with 5:22 left in the first half. Dordt scored the next 15 points. The run started with a three-point basket by Paige Engbers and Payton Harmsen knocked down a three-point shot with 2:32 left in the first half. Back to back baskets by Shae Pollema got Dordt to within seven and then Engbers added another three-point basket with under a minute remaining and Pollema tied it with a basket with :23 left in the half. Presentation did have an answer with a three just before the buzzer to establish a 33-30 lead for the Saints.
Presentation maintained the three-point lead through the third quarter and was up 58-55 with :35 left in the game. Shae Pollema converted a basket with :13 left in the game to get within one points and after a Dordt timeout the Defenders forced a five second infraction. Dordt again called timeout and gave Pollema the ball on the elbow of the lane and she was able to get around her player for a basket and 59-58 lead with :08 left in the game. Presentation went the length of the floor and missed the potential game winner and Dordt secured the win.
-Pollema had 15 points and ten rebounds and was 6-13 from the field.
-Engbers had 13 points and was 4-7 from the three-point line.
-Rachel Evavold scored nine points and Kim Kroeze scored seven.
-Annie Rhinesmith had six assists and one steal.
-Dordt was outrebounded 48-39. The Defenders converted 20-56 field goals for 35.7 percent . Presentation was 23-67 from the field for 34.3 percent.
-Dordt won despite 12-24 free throw shooting.
-Presentation’s Macy Toelle and Krystan Gomez each had 13 points.
-Dordt is now 4-1 and will face Waldorf Friday morning at 11:00. Presentation is 0-3.
