Dordt defeats Mount Marty 90-86
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt College Defender men’s basketball team overcame a five point halftime deficit to defeat Mount Marty 90-86 at Cimpl Arena in Yankton, South Dakota on Wednesday night, February 15. The Defenders trailed by as many as eight points late in the first half before notching their fifth GPAC win.
The Defenders led much of the first 12 minutes and were up 22-19 with 7:45 left in the first half after Marcus Winterfeld knocked down a three-point shot.
Mount Marty answered with a three-point basket to tie the game and led the rest of the half after a basket by Drew Cheskie with 6:37 left in the half. The lead grew to 45-37 after a Zach Telles three-point basket with ten seconds remaining in the half but Chandler Brunsting raced down the court and convert a three-point shot just before the clock ran out to pull Dordt within 45-40.
Cheskie converted the first shot of the second half to extend the lead to 47-40 but back to back three-point shots by Brunsting made it 47-46.
Alec Henrickson got into the act with a three-point shot that gave Dordt its first lead of the second half at 51-49 and Brunsting gave the Defenders a 54-52 lead with 16:47 remaining with his fifth three-point basket of the game. The Lancers regained the lead one more time on a three-point shot with 12:22 left to make it 60-59 but Henrickson made one of his four second half three-point shots for a 62-60 lead and an advantage the visitors never relinquished.
Dordt’s biggest lead was an eight point advantage when Taylor Feenstra made a basket with 7:53 left for a 75-67 lead but the Lancers narrowed it to 81-79 and 83-81. An Andrew O’Donnell basket extended the lead to 86-81 with 2:49 remaining and Dordt made four free throws in the final ten seconds, all by Marcus Winterfeld, to secure the four point win.
-Marcus Winterfeld led Dordt with 19 points and seven rebounds and he handed out three assists.
-Chandler Brunsting scored 16 with seven rebounds and five assists and a steal.
-Andrew O’Donnell and Alec Henrickson each had 14 points with O’Donnell recording five rebounds and four assists with three steals.
-Taylor Feenstra and Josh Van Lingen each had ten points with Feenstra grabbing nine rebounds and Alex Terpstra had seven points.
-Dordt was 30-62 from the field and 13-30 from the three-point line and 17-22 from the free throw line.
-Mount Marty converted 27-59 shots and 13-26 three-point baskets with 19-21 free throw success.
-Dordt had a 42-28 rebounding advantage.
-The Defenders are 14-15 overall and 5-12 in the GPAC. Mount Marty is 0-16 in the league and 4-23 overall.
