Dordt defeats Mount Marty 81-79
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Defenders got a late basket by Alec Henrickson and held on to defeat Mount Marty 81-79 in GPAC play on Saturday, January 7.
The Defenders built a first half lead of 38-30 with 5:00 left after a three-point basket by Alex Terpstra but the Lancers outscored the Defenders 17-4 over the final five minutes to lead 47-42 at halftime, capping surge with a Hunter Martin three-point basket.
Five straight points by the Lancers to start the second half gave them a 52-42 lead before Josh Van Lingen made a free throw to stop the bleeding. The Defenders would outscore the Lancers 12-4 to get within 56-54 with Marcus Winterfeld knocking down a shot in the paint.
Mount Marty pushed the lead up to six and the Defenders needed five in a row with a Henrickson three point shot and a pair of Winterfeld free throws. Dalton Franken gave Dordt its first lead of the second half 71-70 with 2:34 left. The lead changed hands six more times with Franken making a pair of free throws with :19 left for a 79-78 lead. Mount Marty worked the ball in to Drew Cheskie on the next possession and was fouled to prevent a lay up.

Mount Marty was out of timeouts and could muster just a long shot from just inside the halfcourt stripe by Zane Schumaker that was off the mark.

COACH ROSS DOUMA SAID
“Nothing easy about it. I thought we played well the first ten minutes of the game and then there was a lull especially the last four minutes of the first half where surrendered a lot of easy baskets. That made things very difficult for us and it was an uphill climb the whole way. We talked about winning isn’t about luck and it doesn’t just happen…there’s a lot of preparation and execution along the way and I thought in the last 3:40 we executed really well.”
