Dordt defeats Northwestern Ohio 62-60

A putback basket by Chad Barkema proved to be the deciding factor in a non-conference basketball win for the Dordt Defender men’s basketball team on Friday night, November 25 in Grand Rapids, Michigan over Northwestern Ohio in a game hosted by Davenport University.

The Barkema basket capped a game in which Dordt trailed by as many as 10 in the first half and led by as many as 11 in the second half.

The Defenders got down 25-15 with 7:48 left in the first half.  A pair of free throws by Alec Henrickson started a 12-2 run for the Defenders that was capped by a Leighton Sampson basket that tied the game with 1:29 left in the half.  Dordt eventually settled for a 30-29 halftime deficit.

Dordt scored the first seen points of the second half to lead 36-32 and Dordt never trailed again.  The Defender lead grew to 52-41 on an Andrew O’Donnell tip-in with 8:11 left in the game.  Northwestern Ohio pieced together a charge and had the lead down to 57-55 with 1:40 left in the game.  The Racers eventually tied the game with a layup but Leighton Sampson made two free throws with :45 left in the game.  After a missed basket by the Racers O’Donnell converted one of two free throws for a 60-57 lead.  Northwestern Oklahoma was able to tie the game on a three-point basket by Lawrence Jackson with :11 left.

Dordt did not take a timeout and Marcus Winterfeld got a shot up with :04 left that he missed from short range but Barkema was there to pick up the offensive rebound and put it back in with a second left and was fouled.  After a timeut Barkema missed the free throw and with the clock starting on the rebound, Northwestern Ohio was only able to get off a length of the court heave that came up well short of the basket.

“We’ve been giving up a lot of points especially in the last two conference opponents Dakota Wesleyan and Briar Cliff and our practices since then have been pretty good. Last night we practiced on Thanksgiving night and went two and a half hours which is the most we’ve gone in a long time and we just played really hard.  This was a possession by possession game and ten days ago we don’t stand a chance in a game like that so I think we have improved.  I think our mentality was different and we approached some things a little bit differently and hopefully this is a sign of us growing up a little bit on that side of the floor."
