HOW IT HAPPENED

Dordt College had little trouble in turning away Madonna (Michigan) in pool play at the NAIA National Volleyball Championship in Sioux City, Iowa on Wednesday evening, November 30.  The win makes Dordt 2-0 in the pool and the Defenders will advance to the elimination bracket  no matter the outcome of their match with Grand View on Thursday night.

Dordt took a 7-3 lead in set one and eventually led 20-13 before Madonna used its first time out.  Haley Moss’s kill was Dordt’s sixth point out of nine scored.  The Crusaders got as close as 21-17 but the Defenders put the set away with an Elizabeth Kiel kill and an Aubrey Drake ace serve for the 25-18 win.

Dordt trailed 4-3 in set two but scored four points in a row to take an 8-5 lead an Ema Altena kill and a Jill Schouten ace serve bookending the run.  Madonna rallied to tie the set at 14, 15 and 16 but back to points on a Brooke Granstra kill and the senior was in on a block for the 18-16 advantage.  The Defenders did build the lead to 23-20 but the Michigan team charged back for three straight points for a 23-23 tie.  An Altena kill unlocked the tie and Altena teamed with Granstra for a block to give Dordt a 25-23 win and a 2-0 lead.

COACH HANSON SAID

“I felt like in the first set we came out strong.  I don’t remember what the point spread was but I just felt like we created separation early on and we kept building. Our passing kept the ball in a great position for Jamie.  Our defense was digging really well and making minor adjustments so that Jamie could find Brooke in those quick transition moments where she’s up and the opponents block and defense are still trying to recover and if it doesn’t go to Brooke it’s going to another hitter that is engaged and ready to terminate or take a really good swing.”
