Midland defeats Dordt 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-20)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College surrendered a four point lead near the midpoint of set one and never had a substantial lead again in falling to Midland 3-0 in Fremont, Nebraska on Thursday night in GPAC Tournament Semifinal round play.
The Defenders got out to a 15-11 lead but the hosts came back to tie the set at 17-17. Ties followed at 18-18 and 20-20 before Dordt took a 22-21 lead. Midland bounced back with back to back points on an attack error and a Priscilla O’Dowd kill to give the Warriors a 23-22 lead. Dordt did tie it on a Brooke Granstra kill but Midland finished the set with a pair of Jenny Bair kills for a 25-23 win.
Dordt led briefly in set two at 9-7 on kills by Ema Altena and Haley Moss. The set was event up to 17-17 when back to back Midland points put the Warriors up 19-17 and Dordt was unable to get back to even and fell 25-20.
Set three saw Midland get up 17-10 and Dordt crept back to within 19-17 with Brooke Granstra recording an ace but Dordt got no closer and lost by an eventual 25-20 margin.
-Midland controlled play at the net with a .212 kill efficiency to Dordt’s .078.
-Brooke Granstra led the Defenders with 11 kills and Elizabeth Kiel and Ema Altena each had five.
-Jamie Gesink put up 27 assists and Aubrey Drake recorded ten digs.
-Midland was led by KC Heimann and O’Dowd with 12 kills each.
-Midland had nine points on blocks to Dordt’s three and the Warriors had four ace serves to Dordt’s one.
-Dordt is 22-7 while Midland is 26-2.
Midland advances to the GPAC Finals on Saturday at no. 1 seed Hastings with a 26-2 record. Hastings was a 3-0 winner over Doane.
Dordt awaits a berth in the NAIA National Championship field which will be announced Monday, November 14.
