Dordt def. Briar Cliff 3-2 (19-25, 23-25, 25-16, 25-18, 15-11)

Dordt needed five sets to turn away the Briar Cliff Chargers in GPAC volleyball play on Tuesday night in Sioux City.  The Defenders dropped the first two sets before roaring back to stay in the hunt for the Great Plains Athletic Conference title with just two and half weeks to play in the regular season.

Briar Cliff took the lead for good in set one 4-3 and Dordt got no closer than 10-9 before the Chargers stretched the lead to 18-12 when Dordt called its season timeout.  Dordt’s rally was thwarted with a Brooke Granstra kill getting the Defenders as close as 20-16 before Briar Cliff eventually won it on a Katelin Langel kill 25-19.

Set two was more of the same with Dordt falling behind early.  Dordt did score four points in a row to go up 8-6 but the Chargers got ties at 15-15 and 16-16 before leading 17-16 on a Courtney Schafer kill.  Elizabeth Kiel answered with a kill to tie it and Dordt again tied the set at 19-19 with a block but back to back points put the Chargers up for good 21-19 and the hosts won 25-23.

Set three was all Dordt after Dordt fell behind 8-4.  A three point rally and then five points in a row put Dordt up 13-9 and the Defenders used another eight point run to put the set away 25-16.

The Defenders rode the momentum of that set to a 5-1 lead before Briar Cliff tied it at 6-6 and it was tied again at 8-8.  A run of six points in a row by Dordt pushed them from up 11-9 to up 17-9 and the lead proved to be insurmountable as Briar Cliff got no closer than four points and Granstra finished the set with a kill.

Back to back kills by Granstra started set five but Briar Cliff regrouped and the set was tied at 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9.  A Granstra kill put the Defeners up 10-9 and a Briar Cliff attack error gave Dordt a two point lead.  Another attack error by the hosts put Dordt up 12-9 and it was Granstra who gave Dordt two of the last three points on kills to win 15-11.
