Dordt defeats Lourdes 3-1 (25-18, 25-22, 25-27, 30-28)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt started day two of the Northwestern Classic with a 3-1 win over no. 14 ranked Lourdes (Ohio) on Saturday morning, August 27.
The Defenders were in control of set one the whole way and won 25-18, closing on a 4-0 run. Set two saw the Defenders take the lead on an attack error at 3-2 and the Defenders led until a kill put the Gray Wolves up 19-18. A Haley Moss kill tied it 19-19 and the Defenders won it 25-22 on a kill by Elizabeth Kiel.
Dordt was positioned for the sweep with a 24-23 lead in set three on an Ema Altena kill but Lourdes tied it 24-24 and Lourdes tied it 25-25 on a kill. Two Dordt attack errors gave Lourdes a 27-25 win and forced set four.
Dordt was able to put the match away with a 30-28 win in set four. Dordt was up 19-15 but Lourdes came back to tie it 21-21. Three straight points for the Defenders on a Julia Lindbergh kill, an attack error and a Brooke Granstra service ace got Dordt to match point. Lourdes didn’t go easily, tying the set at 24-24. Lourdes took a 27-26 win on a service ace but Elizabeth Kiel put down a kill for the tie and Aubrey Drake gave Dordt the lead with an ace. After a 28-28 tie Altena had a kill and then recorded an ace serve for the win.
BY THE NUMBERS
-Brooke Granstra led all players with 17 kills and she had two service aces and 18 digs.
-Ema Altena put down 15 kills and had three serice aces.
-Jamie Gesink put up 48 service aces and had 11 digs.
-Elizabeth Kiel had 10 kills and was in on ten block assists. Haley Moss also had 10 block assists as Dordt totaled 18 points on blocks.
-Dordt had a .234 kill efficiency while limiting Lourdes to a .127 kill efficiency.
-Dordt had an 11-6 service ace advantage.

“This was a well-played match for us. We needed to demonstrate a long term focus throughout our play and the result was well worth the effort. Our blocking made great adjustments which helped our defense to settle into a good routine throughout the match.”
