Dordt defeats Briar Cliff 4-3 (2 ot)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Natalie Sakuma scored an unassisted goal in the 105th minute to send the Dordt Defender women’s soccer team to a 4-3 double overtime win over the Briar Cliff Chargers in GPAC play Wednesday afternoon, October 5. The game was postponed due to heavy rain in Sioux City on Tuesday.
Dordt never trailed in the game as Sakuma scored off an assist by Mikaela Patterson in the seventh minute for a 1-0 lead. Brooke Herbst had an answer with a goal in the 23rd minute but Sakuma knocked one in the net less than two minutes later to re-establish the lead on the unassisted goal.
Makenna Taylor found the net in the 35th minute for Briar Cliff to knot the score 2-2 at halftime.
Raquelle Mouw broke through for her first goal of the game in the 80th minute off an assist by Kayla Glashower. Playing with the lead, the Defenders were unable to hold the advantage with Herbst getting the equalizer in the 88th minute.
The teams played a scoreless first overtime session with Dordt getting the lone shot on goal in the 10 minute period.
Sakuma sent the Defenders off with a victory with her goal with just over five minutes left in the second overtime.
A FEW NUMBERS
-Dordt had a 12-7 shots on goal advantage.
-Dordt put the pressure on with two shots in each of the extra sessions and totaled 25 shots to ten for Briar Cliff.
-Dee Felts had four saves to preserve the win and Libby Havenridge absorbed the loss for Briar Cliff with seven saves and four goals allowed.
-Dordt also managed four corner kicks to one for the hosts.
-Sakuma now has 12 goals and Mouw has nine.
-Dordt is 6-4-1 overall and 2-1 in the GPAC and will travel to face the College of Saint Mary on Saturday, October 8. Briar Cliff is 4-5-1 overall and 0-3 in the GPAC.
