Dordt defeats Buena Vista 5-2
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt College women’s soccer team started fast and overcame a comeback attempt by the Buena Vista Beavers in non-conference soccer played at Sioux Center on Wednesday, September 14.
Dordt started with a goal by Natalie Sakuma in the second minute of play and tacked on quick scores by Kenzie Bousema in the 11th and 12th minutes. The first Bousema goal was off an assist by Tori Mann and the second was off a corner kick by Sakuma that found the goal after the header by Bousema.
The visitors from Storm Lake struck back with a pair of goals by Caroline Maher in the 13th and 26th minutes and the score remained 3-2 into halftime.
After the intermission Sakuma and Bousema teamed up for a second time with Bousema knocking a goal in during the 48th minute and Mikaela Patterson put the game out of reach on an assist by Kim Khochenmus in the 82nd minute for Dordt’s third win of the season.
Dordt had an 11-6 shots on goal advantage and Dee Felts had four saves for the Defenders.
The Defenders controlled much of play with a 27-10 overall shots advantage and Dordt had six corner kicks while Buena Vista had none.
Bousema has four season goals by Sakuma has a team high six goals and five assists.
Dordt is 3-3-1 this season while Buena Vista falls to 1-2-1.
COACH ELGERSMA SAID
"We had a good win tonight. We have struggled with our mental preparation, and today for much of the game we were alert and focused. We continue to look for combinations that work well together as we deal with injured players, and tonight, some of those combinations were highly effective."
Dordt will host Jamestown on Saturday, September 17 at 2:00 before jumping into GPAC play against Hastings on Saturday, September 24.
