HOW IT HAPPENED

Dordt College overcame a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Briar Cliff Chargers on Thursday night in men’s volleyball play.

The Chargers led start to finish in set one before winning 25-21 and the Chargers won set two 25-13 with Dordt holding its only lead at 1-0.

Dordt started its rally by taking a 10-4 lead with four of Dordt’s points in the early going coming off Briar Cliff attack errors.  The Chargers cut into the lead, getting it down to 20-19 with Matt Moore recording a kill and Eric Geels followed with a kill.  Dordt added to the run with a Briar Cliff attack error and the Defenders went on to win 25-20.

Dordt carried the momentum into the fourth set with six straight points.  Kyle Vander Zee and Ben Tiemersma each had kills and the Chargers had four attack errors.  The hosts did cut into the lead and trimmed it to 13-11 with Geels answering the challenge with a kill.  The Chargers madde one more run at the Defenders, getting to within 21-20 but Geels again had a kill and an attack error by the Chargers gave Dordt some breathing room before winning it 25-23.  Briar Cliff actually tied the score 23-23 on a pair of service aces but a Geels kill stopped the run and an attack error won it.

Set five was tied 4-4 before the Defenders pulled away and won it 15-6 and the run was highlighted by back to back Vander Zee kills.

COACH HANSON SAID

“Our team played this match in two different ways.  The second was the right way and made all the difference for the victory.  Though in a deep hole to start out down 2-0 we showed great character and poise by decreasing our errors and playing smart volleyball.  This was another growing moment for us and it is fun to see us maturing each week.”
