Dordt defeats Ashford 16-4
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt made it a Monday sweep of its competitors on Monday, March 7 in Tucson with a convincing 16-4 win over Ashford (Iowa).
Dordt scored two in the first on run scoring singles by Bryan Wallman and Connor Leppink. Wallman knocked in two more runs in the second inning with a double and Taylor Neuroth scored earlier in the inning on a bases loaded balk.
A huge 10 run, five hit fifth inning for the Defenders put the game out of reach. The frame included a Wallman grand slam and the inning also included two walks, an error and three hit batsmen.
Ashford did get four runs back on four hits in the sixth inning and Dordt answered with one run in the sixth for a final of 16-4.
-Dordt had a 14-10 hits advantage and the Defenders took advantage of seven bases on balls and three hit batsmen.
-Trent Roose earned the win with six innings pitched, three earned runs allowed, one walk and six strikeouts.
-Andrew Vander Hart pitched in relief for Roose and allowed two hits and faced four batters and got a double play to get out of the last inning.
-Bryan Wallman was 3-3 with seven runs batted in and walked once for Dordt.
-Cam Gingerich and Connor Leppink eachc had two hits and Gingierich scored two runs as did Wallman.
-Wallman’s seven runs batted in are a new school record, breaking the previous mark of six held by four individuals. Ted Steffel was the most recent player to knock in six in a game with Manhattan Christian on March 20, 2015.
