Dordt defeats Briar Cliff 3-2 (25-21, 23-25, 22-25, 25-21, 15-11)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt overcame a 2-1 deficit in sets to defeat Briar Cliff 3-2 in conference men’s volleyball play in Sioux Center on Tuesday night. The win caps the regular season for the Defenders.
Dordt won set one 25-21 with the Defender controlling play for much of the set. The last of six ties came at 7-7 and Dordt took the lead for good on a service ace by Kyle Vander Zee.
Set two had Briar Cliff in control from a 10-10 tie on as the visitors led 21-15. Dordt fought back to within 23-22 on an attack error but the Defenders were never able to tie it and lost 25-23. Dordt led by as many as six in set three but Briar Cliff took the lead for good at 15-14 and won 25-22.
The Defenders started their rally in the fourth set and never trailed in winning 25-21 and after a 4-4 tie, the Defenders took a 9-5 lead with a 5-1 advantage keyed by four Briar Cliff attack errors and Dordt went on to win 15-11.
-Kyle Vander Zee led Dordt with 17 kills and 12 digs.
-Matt Moore had 11 kills and two block assists for the Defenders.
-Mark Tiemersma added nine kills and Kapu Mau put down seven.
-Austin Lindemulder had 29 assists and Eric Geels 24. Nathan Struyk got to 17 digs.
-Briar Cliff’s Jacob Ewart led all players with 22 kills.
Dordt is now 4-18 while Briar Cliff is 6-15. Both teams will play in conference tournament action on Friday St. Louis, Missouri.
