Morningside defeats Dordt 3-2 (20-25, 25-17, 17-25, 28-26, 12-15)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt lost a conference match in men’s volleyball to Morningside 3-2 on Wednesday night, March 30 in Sioux City, Iowa.
Dordt never led in set one as the Mustangs pulled away from a 7-7 tie and built a 13-9 advantage. Dordt closed the gap to two on several occasions, the lasts at 19-17 on a Morningside service error, but the gap widened from there and Morningside won it 25-20.
The Defenders bounced back nicely with a 13-6 lead in set one after back to back attack errors. Morningside was never able to mount a serious threat and the Defenders won the set 25-17 to even the match at one set a piece.
Dordt led early in set three, taking a 9-6 advantage on a Ben Tiemersma kill but the hosts came back with five straight points and maintained a lead the rest of the way for a 25-17 win and a 2-1 sets advantage.
Set four was easily the closest 18 ties before Dordt took a 27-26 lead on a Kyle Vander Zee kill and Vander Zee followed with an ace serve for a 28-26 lead, forcing a decisive set five.
The two teams were tied 9-9 in the final set before three straight Morningside points put the hosts in control and Dordt got no closer than 13-11 and 14-12 before losing on an attack error.
-Dordt had a .166 kill efficiency with 51 kills, 26 errors and 151 total attacks.
-Morningside had a .197 kill efficiency with 59 attacks, 28 errors and 157 total attacks.
-Dordt scored 11 points on blocks to Morningside’s nine.
-Kyle Vander Zee had 14 kills and 12 digs. Mark Tiemersma had 13 kills and seven block assists.
-Matt Moore and Ben Tiemersma had eight and seven kills respectively for the Defenders. Moore also had seven block assists.
-Austin Lindemulder put up 27 assists and Eric Geels had 17. Nathan Struyk led Dordt’s back row defense with 20 digs.
-Dordt is 3-18 while Morningside is 9-22.
-Dordt concludes the regular season on Tuesday, April 5 against Briar Cliff.
