Calumet defeats Dordt 3-1 (20-25, 25-22, 25-22, 27-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College lost a 3-1 match to Calumet in the Loras Invitational at Dubuque, Iowa.
The Defenders won the first set 25-20 after trailing early in the set. Dordt used a four point run after getting down 8-6, capitalizing on a service error, a Ben Tiemersma kill and two attack errors by Calumet. Dordt was able to deflect the Calumet rallies and finished the set with a Kyle Vander Zee kill for the final of 25-20.
The Defenders started set two fast with an 11-7 lead but Calumet recovered to tie the set at 12-12. Ties ensued at 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 and 19. Dordt got back to back points on an attack error and a service ace by Austin Lindemulder. Calumet again rallied to tie it at 21 and took the lead 22-21 as part of a three point run. Dordt tied it 22-22 with a Vander Zee kill but Calumet scored three in a row for a 25-22 win.
Calumet used the momentum from set two to take a five point lead and was up 23-17 before Dordt scored a point on Mark Tiemersma kill and three straight attack errors by Calumet. A Calumet kill stopped the run and propelled Calumet to a 25-22 win.
Calumet again built a sizable lead past the midpoint of the contest 19-13. Dordt proceeded to score nine of the next 10 points to lead 22-20. The score was tied at 23 and 24 and a Mark Tiemersma kill got Dordt to set point but Calumet tied it on a Dordt service error and a Dordt attack error got Calumet to match point and a ball handling error gave Calumet the win.
-Dordt hit for a .231 kill efficiency with 51 kills, 24 errors and 117 attacks.
-Calumet hit for a .183 kill efficiency with 47 kills, 26 errors and 115 attacks.
-Dordt had six ace serves and 18 service errors. Calumet had 1 service ace and 10 service errors.
-Calumet had 11 points on blocks and Dordt had 12.
-Dordt was led at the net by Mark Tiemersma with 16 kills and six block assists with a .393 kill efficiency.
-Ben Tiemersma had 12 kills for Dordt with a .304 kill efficiency.
-Eric Geels put up 25 assiss and had five digs and Austin Lindemulder had 16 assists.
-Tim Williams and Trevor Wagner each had 14 kills for Calumet.
-Dordt is 0-2 while Calumet is 2-3. Dordt will play two matches on Saturday against Robert Morris and Cincinnati Christian.
