Dordt defeats Dakota Wesleyan 3-2 (12 innings).
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College scored a run in the top of the ninth inning to tie game two of its doubleheader with Dakota Wesleyan and took a 3-2 decision from Dakota Wesleyan in 12 innings.
Wesleyan scored a run in the bottom of the first inning for a 1-0 lead. Wesleyan did not have baserunner in the third, fourth or fifth innings. Dordt put together a threat in the top of the sixth but left two runners on base.
Dordt finally broke through in the top of the ninth with Cam Gingerich singling in to lead off the frame. A sacrifice bunt put Gingerich on second and Jake Thayer singled him in. A double play ended the inning.
The Defenders scored two runs in the twelfth inning when Jake Thayer walked and Colton Van Otterloo had a double. An error allowed Van Otterloo to score for a 3-1 lead. Dordt had the bases loaded but got no more runs and went to the twelfth.
A walk, a single and a wild pitch got the tying run to second base. Another walk loaded the bases. Connor Hopkins came on in relief and recorded a strikeout before walking in a run. The righthander than got a pair of strikeouts with the tying run at third base to close out the game.
-Dordt’s Brandon Fokkema started the game and went six and a third innings and allowed one run on two hits with four bases on balls and four strikeouts.
-Zach Zylstra pitched four and two-third innings in relief and allowed one hits and had four strikeouts with no bases on balls.
-Hopkins got the save after facing four batters in the twelfth inning.
-Gingerich had two hits with a run scored and Teddy Steffel had two hits.
-Dordt outhit Dakota Wesleyan 8-4.
-Dordt is now 19-23 overall land 7-11 in the GPAC. Dakota Wesleyan is 23-25 overall and 7-11 in the GPAC.
-Dordt will host Northwestern on Monday, May 2 in the regular season finale for both teams.
