Dordt defeats Midland 9-4.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt bounced back to take a split of its doubleheader against Midland on Saturday afternoon in Sioux Center.
Colton Van Otterloo started Dordt’s scoring when he singled in the second and scored on an error.
The 1-0 lead held until Midland scored four runs on five hits in the sixth inning. Dordt responded with two runs in the sixth with Cam Gingerich and Josh Van Eps each getting a run batted in with a single. After a scoreless seventh Dordt scored four runs on five hits and two errors in the frame.
Bryan Wallman started with a double and gave way to pinch runner Jacob Monsma. Two outs later the Defenders got a base runner out of Chris O’Conner as he was hit by a pitch. Josh Van Eps singled to score a run and another run came in on an error. Glen Thompson delivered a pinch hit single and Cam Gingerich also had a hit in the frame as Dordt took a 7-4 lead.
Dordt scored a pair of unearned runs on two errors in the eighth inning and held on as Cole Samuelson completed his three innings of work with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
-Cam Gingerich had a 4-5 day at the plate with one run batted in.
-Trent Roose, Jake Thayer and Josh Van Eps all had two hits and Taylor Neuroth scored three runs as a courtesy runner for Van Eps.
-Dordt had a 15-10 hits advantage.
-Brandon Fokkema started the game and went five and two-third innings with four runs allowed and five strikeouts.
-Samuelson pitched three innings and walked one with one strikeout and allowed one hit while facing ten batters.
-Connor Hopkins faced one batter in the sixth inning for the Defenders.
-Samuelson is 1-1 on the mound and Dordt is 16-19 overall and is 4-8 in the conference. Midland is 29-15 overall and 8-4 in the conference.
