Briar Cliff defeats Dordt 19-11
HOW IT HAPPENED
A fast start by the Briar Cliff Charger baseball team got them a 19-11 win over Dordt in game two of their doubleheader in Sioux City on Friday, April 15.
Dordt got down 8-0 after three innings as Briar Cliff took advantage of eight hits and a Dordt error.
Dordt got five runs back in the top of the fourth when Bryan Wallman and Teddy Steffel singled and Wallman scored on Steffel’s hit when the Briar Cliff leftfielder misplayed the ball. Colton Van Otterloo followed with a homerun to make it 8-3. Chris O’Conner kept the threat going with a walk and Chris Schrieber singled. Connor Leppink walked to load the bases. O’Conner scored on a double play and Thayer produced a run scoring single.
Briar Cliff responded to the threat with a grand slam in the fourth inning. Dordt’s two run fifth inning and one run sixth with a Bryan Wallman single for a run batted in cut the gap to 12-8.
A two run sixth inning and another run in the seventh for the hosts put them up 15-8. Dordts’ last charge in the eighth inning was highlighted by another Wallman single for a run and a Van Otterloo double that plated two runs.
Briar Cliff sealed it with four runs in the eighth inning.
-Wallman was 4-5 at the plate for Dordt with two runs batted in.
-Teddy Steffel was 3-5 with two runs scored.
-Chris Schrieber, Cam Gingerich and Jake Thayer all had two hits as Dordt was outhit 20-16.
-Michael Grady took the loss with two innings pitched and allowed eight runs on eight hits.
-Schyler Kane pitched three innings and walked two with two strikeouts. Andrew Vander Hart also pitched three innings in relief and allowed five runs on eight hits.
-Dordt is 15-18 overall and 3-7 in the league and will face Midland on Saturday in Sioux Center. Briar Cliff is 23-17 overall and 7-3 in the GPAC.
