Mayville State defeats Dordt 10-9
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt overcame an early 6-0 deficit but lost in extra innings to the Mayville State Comets in game one of their doubleheader in Sioux Center on Tuesday, April 5.
Dordt surrendered five runs on four hits and another run on two hits in the second inning to trail 6-0. Dordt got a run back with a ground out by Jordan Van Maanen that got Colton Van Otterloo across. The game turned in the following half inning when Dordt got an inning double play with the bases loaded.
With renewed energy Dordt continued to chip away at the lead, getting two runs on three hits in the third with Glen Thompson knocking in a run and Jake Thayer plated a run on a fielder’s choice. After a one-two-three fourth inning by the Defenders in the top of the fourth Dordt took the lead with four runs in the home half of the frame. Cam Gingerich, Jake Thayer, Teddy Steffel and Glen Thompson all had run scoring singles to give Dordt a brief 7-6 lead.
Mayville State scored two runs on three hits in the fifth and Dordt evened it with a run in the fifth inning as Trent Roose scored on a wild pitch.
The visitors retook the lead with run in the sixth inning on a leadoff homerun. Neither team scored in their next at bats as Dordt left a runner on third base in the sixth. Dordt did tie it with a run in the seventh on a throwing error as pinch runner Taylor Neuroth stole third and took home on the catcher’s throwing error.
The two teams were scoreless in the eighth and ninth with Mayville State getting a run in the top of the tenth on two hits and Dordt stranded the tying run at first base in the home half of the frame as Gingerich singled with one out but didn’t get moved around.
-Gingerich was 4-6 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and one run batted in.
-Connor Leppink, Jake Thayer, Glen Thompson and Trent Roose all had two hits and Thayer and Roose each had a pair of runs scored. Thompson had two runs batted in as did Thayer.
-Tyler Wiedner started the game and went four innings and allowed eight runs on 11 hits with three strikeout and three walks.
-Brandon Fokkema took the loss in relief and went two and one-third innings with two hits allowed and one run with four strikeouts.
-Chris Schrieber worked middle relief and pitched three and two-third innings with one walk and four strikeouts and walked one.
-Dordt outhit Mayville State 15-14 and Mayville State had both defensive errors.
