Hastings defeats Dordt 5-3
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hastings took a come from behind victory over Dordt in game one of their doubleheader in Hastings, Nebraska on Saturday, April 2. The Defenders had a 3-0 lead but were unable to hold on to the advantage.
Dordt got two runs in the first inning with Teddy Steffel knocking a triple to score both Colton Van Otterloos and Jake Thayer. Hastings stranded a pair of runners in the home half of that inning and another in the second inning before Dordt added to the 2-0 lead.
Dordt started the inning with a Colton Van Otterloo single and advanced with a stolen base. Steffel followed with a ground out to the right side of the infield and Van Otterloo scored when the second baseman misplayed the grounder.
Hastings got its offense going with a run in the bottom of the third and then took the lead with three runs in the fourth inning as the Broncos took advantage of just one hit with a passed ball, a walk and an error figuring into the scoring. Hastings took the lead in the next inning but Dordt kept it close as Hastings stranded two runners.
Dordt threatened in the sixth inning when Steffel singled and Connor Leppink followed with a single. A double steal put runners at second and third with no outs but Steffel was out at home trying to score on a grounder to third and a strikeout and a ground out ended the inning.
Dordt got the tying run at the plate in the seventh inning but couldn’t rally from the two run deficit.
-Dordt had a 9-5 hits advantage.
-Connor Hopkins absorbed the loss with two earned runs allowed in six innings of work. He struck out five and allowed five hits and six bases on balls.
-Cameron Gingerich, Colton Van Otterloo and Teddy Steffel all had two this with Van Otterloo scoring twice and Steffel got credit for three runs batted in.
-Steffel’s triple was Dordt’s only extra base hit of the game.
