Dordt defeats Mayville State 6-5
HOW IT HAPPENED
Two runs in the sixth inning by the Dordt Defenders gave them a 6-5 win over Mayville State in game one of their doubleheader in Tucson, Arizona on Tuesday, March 8.
Dordt scored two in the first inning with Jacob Monsma doubling in Bryan Wallman and Jake Thayer. Dordt missed out on a bigger inning when they left two runners on base.
Mayville State followed with a run in the first on a hit and an error and the Comets got another run in the second as they took advantage of a pair of errors.
Dordt answered with a run in the third to retake the lead with Cameron Gingerich doubling and eventually scoring on a Ted Steffel sacrifice fly.
Mayville State took its first lead in the fourth inning on three hits and an error and Dordt had to come from behind. Bryan Wallman tied the game in the fifth inning as Dordt plated an unearned run courtesy a pair of hits and two errors.
A Mayville State run in the fifth put the Comets up one but Dordt’s Steffel pushed Dordt ahead by one with a two run single that scored Jake Thayer and Jason Holwerda.
From there it was Cole Samuelson shutting the door on Mayville State as he pitched a scoreless final two innings to secure the save and the victory for Dordt.
-Dordt had nine hits to six for the Comets.
-Both teams struggled with errors as Dordt committed four and Mayville State three.
-Connor Hopkins got the win as he left after one inning of work and in the fifth and Dordt took the lead before Samuelson came on for the final two innings.
-Hopkins allowed one hit and struck out one.
-Samuelson got his second save of the season with three strikeouts.
-Chris Schreiber pitched four innings for Dordt in the start and allowed five earned runs with two strikeouts and two bases on balls.
-Jake Thayer, Cameron Gingerich and Jacob Monsma all had two hits with Gingerich and Monsma each getting a double.
-Thayer scored two runs and Bryan Wallman also had two runs scored.
-Ted Steffel had three runs batted in and Monsma knocked in a pair.
