Dordt defeats McPherson 4-3

HOW IT HAPPENED

A four run first inning propelled the Dordt Defenders to s 4-3 win over McPherson in game two of their doubleheader on Friday afternoon in Hutchinson, Kansas.

The win didn’t come without its tense moments in the late innings as Dordt made the early runs stand up.

The game started with Jake Thayer singling and a wild pitch advanced Thayer to second.  Connor Leppink singled Thayer in and Cameron Gingerich moved Leppink up with a sacrifice bunt.  Teddy Steffel singled in Leppink in with two outs and Trent Roose kept the threat rolling with a single.  A Colton Van Otterloo double to the alley in left center pushed two more runs across before the inning ended.

McPherson got its first hit off Trent Roose in the third but a double play ended the threat.  Dordt stranded two in the fourth and the hosts got one run on one hit in the bottom of the fourth.  Dordt threatened again in the fifth but stranded a runner as the Bulldogs got a double play to end the inning.

McPherson put together a charge in the sixth and scored two runs on three hits as the Defenders committed a pair of errors but got  out of the inning with a strikeout and a ground out with two runners on base.

Cole Samuelson came on to pitch the seventh for Dordt and got the save as he got a ground out before surrendering a single but the runner was caught stealing by Dordt’s catcher Chris Schrieber and Samuelson struck out the final batter.
