HOW IT HAPPENED
Northwestern (MN) got a late free throw to secure a one point win over the Defenders in a the season opener for Dordt College played in St. Paul, Minnesota.
Dordt trailed 14-13 at the end of the first quarter after falling behind 12-3 just under five minutes into the game. Alissa Pollema and Paige Engers had a free throw and three-point basket respectively to get Dordt within 12-7 and Engbers later hit another three and Abby Chapman had a three-point shot as well to narrow the gap to 14-13. Emily Neuman made it eight points in a row for Dordt with a basket early in the second quarter.
Northwestern took as much as a five point lead with 1:41 left in the first half but a Chapman three-point shot followed by two free throws from Cassidy Vredevoogd and a Robyn Blount basket got the Defenders up 33-31. The hosts regained the lead and were up 37-33 before a Kim Kroeze three-point shot just before the buzzer made it 37-36 for Northwestern.
Dordt pushed the lead to as many as 12on two different occasions in the third quarter, the last with 1:02 left on a Kroeze three-point basket. Dordt then added one more to the lead at 63-50 on a Chapman basket but the hosts started cutting away at the lead and eventually took a one point lead with :58 left in the game and a free throw at the :34 mark made it 73-71.
Dordt managed to tie the contest with an Alissa Pollema jumper with :28 remaining. A pair of free throws by Northwestern’s Amy Berglund put them in front 75-73 but Chapman was fouled moments later and tied it 75-75.
Northwestern’s Kim Campbell was able to draw a foul late in the contest and made one of two free throws and Dordt was unable to get off a shot to win it.
-Dordt was 26-64 shooting for 40.6 percent and 12-30 on three-point baskets.
-Northwestern was 28-60 from the field for 46.7 percent but made just 2-12 three-point shots.
-Dordt got to the free throw line 21 times and made 11. Northwestern was 18-24.
-Dordt had a 41-37 rebounding edge but had 19 turnovers to 12 for the hosts.
-Cassidy Vredevoogd had 15 points and nine rebounds.
-Paige Engbers converted 5-10 three-point shots for 15 points and had six rebounds.
-Alissa Pollema and Abby Chapman both had 11 points. Pollema had four assists.
-Kim Kroeze had six points and seven assists for Dordt.
-Northwestern was led by Jessica Cole’s 13 points while Regan Cooper had 12 points and four rebounds.
-Dordt is 0-1 and will host Dakota State on Tuesday in Sioux Center. Northwestern will count this game as an exhibition contest.
