Dordt defeats Alberta 64-55
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College led start to finish in taking a 64-55 win over the Alberta Golden Bears at a classic hosted by Vanguard University on Tuesday, December 29 in Costa Mesa, California.
Dordt scored the first seven points of the game on with Leighton Sampson scoring five in a row after Dalton Franken opened the scoring with a jump shot. Dordt built the lead all the way to 27-8 with Austin Bykerk making a free throw with 8:07 left in the half.
The Golden Bears got going with a six point run and then went on an eight point spree to get the difference down to 29-22 with 3:48 remaining in the half. Alberta got as close as 32-28 but Dordt answered with an Alec Henrickson three-point shot before settling for a 35-29 halftime lead.
Alberta kept the game close in the second half, whittling the lead to 45-42 with 12:09 left and the three-point difference stayed at 47-44 before a Leighton Sampson free throw and a Bryan Sumner three-point basket with 10:16 left in the game gave Dordt some cushion.
Nathan Rindels scored on a putback with 8:39 left to get Dordt up seven and two minutes later Henrickson hit his second three-point basket of the game to extend a five point lead up to eight and Alberta was never closer than six the rest of the game as Dordt effectively put the game away with a Sampson dunk off an assist by Franken.
-both teams struggled with shooting success as Alberta was 19-55 for 34.5 percent and Dordt was 23-66 for 34.8 percent success.
-Dordt made 7-18 three-point baskets for 38.9 percent and Alberta was 4-22. Alberta’s Colby Jackson was 4-6 from the arc and the rest of his team was a combined 0-16.
-Dordt managed a 47-43 rebounding advantage despite facing a team that had a distinct size advantage.
-Nathan Rindels recorded his fifth double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds and he also had seven assists.
-Leighton Sampson scored 20 and had six rebounds.
-Alec Henrickson and Dalton Franken had eight and seven points respectively and Andrew O’Donnell and Bryan Sumner both had six points. Austin Bykerk had seven rebounds and O’Donnell had four assists and three steals.
-Alberta was led by Jackson’s 19 points and Mamadou Gueye scored 16 and had eight rebounds.
Dordt will face Northern British Columbia on Wednesday, December 30 at 5:30 (Central) before resuming GPAC play on Wednesday, January 5 against Mount Marty in Sioux Center.
