Viterbo defeats Dordt 86-76

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

Viterbo (Wisconsin) used a 51 percent shooting day from the floor to defeat Dordt College 86-76 in non-conference basketball on Saturday afternoon in Orange City.

The two teams were tied 13-13 at the 13:23 mark of the first half after Alex Terpstra hit  pair of free throws.  Viterbo proceeded to go on a 12-0 run over the next five minutes and led 42-29 at halftime after Dordt had cut the lead to 35-29 on a Nathan Rindels basket with 2:42 left in the half and Viterbo closed the half with a 7-0 run.

Dordt trailed 45-31 two minutes into the second half before Dordt rallied, eventually tying the game 49-49 with 12:19 left in the game on a Bryan Sumner three-point basket.  The Defenders went up 55-51 with 9:09 left in the game on a pair of Alec Henrickson free throws.

Viterbo had an answer as they pushed out to a 62-56 lead with 4:59 remaining and Dordt was fighting from behind the rest of the game and never got closer than three the rest of the game.

 

THE NUMBERS

-Dordt converted 26-59 field goals for 44.1 percent and 16-28 free throws for 52.9 percent.

-Viterbo was 27-53 from the field and 28-42 on free throws for 50.9 percent from the field and 66.7 from the charity stripe.

-Viterbo had a 32-31 rebounding advantage.  Dordt had 10 turnovers to 15 for the Defenders.

-Nathan Rindels had 16 points and five rebounds for Dordt before fouling out.  He also had five assists.

-Alec Henrickson scored 13 and was 3-6 from the three-point line for the Defenders.

-Andrew O’Donnell had nine points and Bryan Sumner was one of four players with eight points.  Leighton Sampson, Grant Harkness and Taylor Feenstra all had eight points and Feenstra had a team high seven rebounds.

-Viterbo was paced by Jared Flieshmann who scored 21 points and made 11-14 free throws.  Pete Drummond added 20 points.

-Dordt is 2-3 this season and will host Northwestern in GPAC play on Wednesday night in Sioux Center.  Viterbo improves to 3-2.
