Briar Cliff defeats Dordt 67-45
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dordt College Defenders surrendered a run of points to the Briar Cliff Chargers late in the third quarter and were not able to overcome the separation it created in dropping a 67-45 decision.
The Defenders battled even with the Chargers much of the first half, tying the score 12-12 with 2:51 left in the first quarter on a Kim Kroeze basket and the Defenders were down 18-16 at the end of the first quarter with Kroeze getting the last bucket of the quarter to get the score to a two point difference.
Dordt took its only lead of the game with a three-point play by Robyn Blount with 9:09 left in the first half, pushing the Defenders to a 19-18 lead. Briar Cliff threatened to pull away with a 31-24 lead but the Defenders cut the gap to 31-29 with a three-point basket by Paige Engbers and a two-point basket by Cassidy Vredevoogd to close the half.
Neither teams scored for the first 2:58 of the second half before Briar Cliff broke the ice with a two point basket. The lead wavered between five and one point with Dordt cutting the gap to 40-39 with 3:40 left in the quarter on a Jamie Gesink basket. It was the last basket Dordt scored in the quarter and Briar Cliff reeled off 12 straight points to close the quarter. The Chargers scored the first points of the fourth quarter to extend the lead to 54-39 before an Abby Chapman basket stopped the run.
The lead was never less than 13 the rest of the game and grew to the final margin of victory 67-45.
-Dordt was led by Cassidy Vredevoogd’ss nine points while Mycah Hulst had eight points and 13 rebounds with three blocked shots.
-Kim Kroeze had six points and nine rebounds with three assists. Robyn Blount had seven points and five rebounds.
-Jamie Gesink had five steals and two assists and Paige Engbers scored six.
-Briar Cliff was led by Morgan Hansen’s 18 points and Kaylee Blake had 10 points and seven rebounds.
-Dordt was 18-54 from the field for 33 percent success and Briar Cliff was 28-62 from the field for 45.2 percent.
-Briar Cliff had 20 steals and forced Dordt turnovers. Dordt had 10 steals and held a 41-31 rebounding advantage.
-Dordt is 8-18 overall and 4-15 in the GPAC. Briar Cliff is 19-7 overall and 12-7 in the GPAC and is part of a five way tie for second place in the league race.

“I was disappointed with how we handled the press in the second half. I thought they came out more physical and tough and we didn’t handle our press break at all. We didn’t make good decisions in the second half out of the press and that led to us scoring just six field goals.”
