Dordt def. Olivet Nazarene 25-17, 25-23, 26-28, 25-9
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College closed pool play with a win over Olivet Nazarene (Illinois) on Thursday night, December 3 at the NAIA National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa.
Dordt ran out to a 9-4 lead in set one with five of the Dordt points coming by attack errors by the Tigers. Dordt maintained the lead despite a couple charges by Olivet Nazarene, pulling away from a 9-8 lead after four straight Tiger points, to score three in a row and eventually led 20-12 before settling for the 25-17 win.
In set two the Defenders scored three but gave up four. Olivet Nazarene rallied again after Dordt had a 7-5 lead to score three in a row and led 8-7. The score was tied at 9, 10, 12, 13, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21. A kill by Ema Altena and an attack error put the Defenders up 23-21. The two teams swapped points to the Dordt 25-23 win with Elizabeth Kiel recording a kill to finish the set. In all, the set featured 13 ties.
Dordt appeared poised to sweep the match with an 18-11 advantage. A five point run by the Tigers narrowed it to 18-16 and the Tigers eventually led 21-20 after back to back attack errors by the Defenders. Olivet Nazarene served for the set at 24-23 and again at 25-24. Each time Dordt had an answer and the Defenders eventually got in position to serve for the win after kills by Jenna Horstman and Haley Moss. Three straight kills though by Olivet Nazarene gave the Tigers the win and forced set four.
Set four was all Dordt with the Defenders getting up 14-4. There would be no Olivet Nazarene comeback this time and Dordt won 25-9.
-Dordt hit for a .423 kill efficiency in set four and an overall .198 kill efficiency. Olivet Nazarene was limited to .093 for the entire match and had a high of .200 in set three.
-Brooke Granstra had 17 kills and 14 digs and handled all 15 of her serve receptions cleanly.
-Jenna Horstman had 12 kills and Ema Altena had 11 for Dordt.
-Jamie Gesink put up 41 assists for Dordt.
-The Defenders had seven service aces with Summer Jansen recording four and Jill Schouten two. Jansen also had 22 digs for lead Dordt
-Dordt handled 72 serves by Olivet Nazarene cleanly and the Tigers recorded no ace serves.
-Katie Tabisz led Olivet Nazarene with 17 kills and Becky De Ruiter had 11 for the Chicagoland Conference member.
-Dordt concludes the season with a 25-7 mark and its 11th trip to the NAIA National Championship event.

“I am happy with our play tonight and in this match. I am happy with the way we worked through the emotional difficulty of this match and finding something to play for. I’m happy with how we persevered and how we stayed with a strong focus and came out strong. We came out strong in all four sets and gave ourselves a chance to win this one. I love this outcome and that we were able to finish with a win. It’s not just about the w but how we went about it,” said Dordt coach Chad Hanson.
