The College of Saint Mary defeats Dordt 3-0 (27-25, 30-28, 25-16)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College was on its heels most of the match against the College of Saint Mary and lost a GPAC Quarterfinal round match played in Sioux Center on Saturday night, November 7.
Dordt led 5-1 at the start of set one but the visitors answered back immediately, taking the lead at 12-11 with a six point run. Kills by Jenna Horstman and Haley Moss were part of a three-point run that gave Dordt a brief 15-13 lead but the Flames again had an answer with a three point run to lead 16-15. Dordt trailed until a Brooke Granstra kill broke a 22-22 tie. Back to back kills by Elaine Kramer put the Flames at set point and the Flames fought off Dordt ties at 24-24 and 25-25 to win 27-26 in a set that featured nine ties.
The Flames used the momentum of set one to take a 12-5 lead in set two. The Defenders eventually responded with a 12-5 run to tie the set 19-19 after the Flames had built a 15-7 lead. Dordt actually put together a seven point run to lead 22-19 but was unable to hold the lead with the Flames again stringing together four points to lead 23-22. Dordt never led again in the set as the teams traded points to 28-28 before back to back kills won it for the no. 8 seed in the tournament.
Set three was never close after an eight point run made the score 18-8 and the Flames earned the sweep with the 15-16 win.
-Dordt hit for a .147 kill efficiency and the Flames had a .245 success rate.
-Dordt committed 23 attack errors.
-Brooke Granstra had 12 kills and 18 digs for Dordt.
-Ema Altena had 11 kills and Jenna Horstman put down nine.
-Summer Jansen led Dordt with 21 digs and Jamie Gesink had 34 assists.
-Elaine Kramer put down 15 kills for the Flames while Mallory Babic had 12 and Alexis Anderson 10.
-Cassidy Yong had a match high 39 assists for the Flames and Bailee Goft had 22 digs.
-Dordt is eliminated from the GPAC Tournament and stand 23-5 while the Flames advance on to face Concordia on Wednesday in the semifinal round with a 13-16 overall mark.
-The Defenders will await a potential berth in the NAIA National Championships which begin with Opening Round play on Saturday, November 21 at campus sites. The National Championship field will be announced Sunday, November 15.
