HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt College overcame sizable deficits in two of its three sets with Concordia in GPAC play on Saturday afternoon in Seward, Nebraska.
Dordt fell behind 5-2 in set one and the Defenders were down 19-16 after an attack error by the Defenders. Dordt scored three of the next four points to stay within striking distance and eventually tied the set on a Brooke Granstra ace serve and took its first lead since 15-14 on a Concordia attack error at 23-22. A kill by Concordia’s Tiegen Skains and a service error got the Defenders to set point and Ema Altena put the set away with a kill for a 25-23 final.
Set two didn’t require the dramatics with the teams playing even to an 8-8 tie. A Granstra ace put Dordt up for good and the Defenders scored three of their next four points on blocks to lead 13-8. Concordia got no closer than four (16-12) the rest of the set and Granstra recorded back to back ace serves for the final two points of the set as Dordt won 25-17.
Set three had the hosts in control early as the Bulldogs built a 4-1 lead and they were still up by three at 10-7. Dordt pulled even on a Jenna Horstman kill at 13-13 but the hosts had an answer with five of the next six points to lead 18-14. A pair of Altena kills coupled with two Concordia attack errors and a Gesink and Horstman kill eventually evened the score at 20-20. The two teams traded kills with Gesink getting another for Dordt and Paige Getz got one for Concordia. Gesink added another kill and Horstman followed to give Dordt a 23-21 edge and the Defenders went up 24-21 on an attack error.
