Dordt defeats Morningside 25-18, 25-20. 25-18
HOW IT HAPPENED
Dordt controlled its match with Morningside on Wednesday night in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Defenders took a 4-1 lead in set one and built the lead to 8-2 before Morningside used a timeout. Morningside battled back to within 13-12 with four straight points but the Defenders never relinquished the lead and an Aubrey Drake ace serve put the Defenders up 19-15. Dordt then closed the set by scoring four of its last six points on blocks for the 25-18 win.
Dordt again had an early lead in set two, building a 6-2 advantage on a Haley Moss kill. The hosts fought back for a tie at 7-7 and there were ties at 9, 11, 12, 13 and 14 before three straight points by the Mustangs put them up 17-14. A timeout by the Defenders resulted in Moss getting a kill and a block by the Defenders cut the difference to 17-16. Dordt eventually tied the set at 19-19 on a Morningside attack error and Ema Altena knocked a kill down for a 20-19 lead that Dordt never relinquished. Dordt eventually won the set on a Moss kill for the 25-20 win.
Set three was tight early with ties at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 11. Dordt took a 12-11 lead with a Julia Lindbergh kill and an illegal contact by Morningside put Dordt up 13-11. Elizabeth Kiel capped the four point run with a kill and Dordt used another five point run to go up 20-12. Morningside made a five point run to get within 20-17 but a block by the Defenders stopped the run and Dordt eventually won the set and match on a Moss kill.
-Dordt hit .326 in the match and committed just 14 errors in 86 attempts but had a higher than normal eight service errors.
-Morningside was plagued by hitting errors with 24 and they hit for a .022 kill efficiency.
-Dordt scored 10 points on blocks and had three ace serves.
-Dordt had five players with at least five kills and had three with nine kills.
-Ema Altena had nine kills with no errors in 15 attacks and was in on five block assists.
-Brooke Granstra had nine kills with four block assists.
-Haley Moss had nine kills with four block assists.
-Julia Lindbergh had eight kills and Elizabeth Kiel added five in the balanced Dordt attack.
-Jamie Gesink put up 28 assists with six digs.
-Aubrey Drake had two service aces.
-Kaitlynn Madsen and Jayde Bergman had nine and seven kills for Morningside to account for 16 of the Mustangs’ 26 kills.
-Dordt now has a 12 match winning streak—the longest in Coach Chad Hanson’s tenure.
-Dordt is 12-1 and 4-0 in the GPAC. Morningside is 4-10 overall and 0-4 overall. Dordt hasn’t lost since August 28. Morningside hasn’t won since that date.
-Dordt will host Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday in GPAC play.
COACH HANSON SAYS
"I love our blocking. Early on in set one we had balls that were just sneaking through our block between blockers or we were just a little bit late. Then we got better timed in that first set. That was the success you saw which really carried forward," said Dordt College volleyball coach Chad Hanson.
