HOW IT HAPPENED

Dordt started slowly but closed in a hurry with a GPAC volleyball win over Briar Cliff in Sioux Center on Saturday evening.

Dordt never led in set one as the hosts fell behind 9-4 before fighting back to an 11-11 tie as Brooke Granstra put away a kill.  The score was tied again at 12-12 before the Chargers pulled away for a 25-17 win.

Set two saw Dordt take the lead 3-2 on a Jamie Gesink ace  serve and Briar Cliff had an attack error.  Dordt eventually led 6-2 before the Chargers tied it at 6-6 and 8-8.  The score was still 12-11 Dordt when Julia Lindbergh got a kill and that led to an attack error by the Chargers and an eventual 15-11 lead.  Briar Cliff scored back to back points to cut it to 15-13.  Dordt seized the momentum with three kills by Granstra and two by Haley Moss and Dordt won 25-14.

Set three  was 13-13 when Brooke Granstra slammed a kill for the lead and Aubrey Drake went to the service area and she proceeded to serve ten straight times and Dordt ended up winning 25-15.

Set four saw the Chargers get up 3-0 before Dordt tied it on an Ema Altena kill at 5-5 and a Summer Jansen ace serve put the Defenders up for good 7-6.  A three point run gave the Defenders a four point lead 15-11 and Dordt steadily grew the lead out to a 25-18 final.

COACH HANSON SAYS

“We were less eager in the front part of the match than I wanted us to be and it showed in the service line and we were just reacting just a split second late.  This was a great win for us.  Once we turned it on we kept it on.  We stayed steady, focused and aggressive,” said Dordt College coach Chad Hanson.
