Mount Mercy defeats Dordt 3-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mount Mercy defeated Dordt College in non-conference play 3-1 on Saturday, September 12 in Sioux Center, Iowa.
Mount Mercy scored in the 32nd minute on a goal by Marco Fichtner off an assist by Mahamed Hamed. Yinka Ajibola scored in the 51st minute for a 2-0 lead before Dordt gave itself a chance on a goal by Alex Durbin off an assist by Cody Van Holland. Durbin put it in the goal with a header off the pass from Van Holland.
Dordt threatened in the latter stages of the game but Mount Mercy was able to thwart those challenges and scored in the 85th minute as Fichtner found the goal for his second goal of the game.
-Dordt was outshot overall 14-10 and on goal 8-3.
-VJ Hachaba had a pair of shots on goal and the only other shot on goal was Durbin's header.
-Durbin now has five goals this season and is second on the team to Hachaba with six.
-Jack McCool made five saves in goal for Dordt.
-Mount Mercy has now won six games in a row after dropping its first two contests.
-Dordt is 3-2 and ends their homestand to start the season. Dordt also had a game this past Wednesday that was washed out at halftime, so, the Defenders had six dates at home to start the 2015 season.
COACH STIEMSMA SAYS
"We played very well in the second half with many good opportunities. We sure had to work hard defensively as they are a talented group and played quick. The put a lot of pressure on our back line," said Stiemsma.
Dordt will face Jamestown (North Dakota) on the road next Saturday, September 19 in the next outing for the Defenders.
