How it Happened

The Dordt Defender men’s soccer team won a come from behind 2-1 decision over Trinity Christian on Friday, August 21.  The Defenders were playing at home in the season opener for both teams.

Javier Contreras opened the scoring with a goal off an assist by Richie Carrillo in the 34th minute.  Carrillo led Contreras who poked it by Dordt’s Jack McCool for the 1-0 lead.

The lead held into the second half when VJ Hachaba scored after Cody Zonnefeld put the ball near the mouth of the goal and tapped it in during the 60th minute. 

Things got difficult for the Trolls in the final 30 minutes when Nate Smith was sent off with a red card after he was charged with dragging a Dordt player down on a breakaway in the 63rd minute.  Seven minutes later Lucas VanderBerg scored a goal on a scrum in front of the goal for a 2-0 lead.  The score was costly for Trinity as it lost its starting goalkeeper Gabe Fennema to injury on the play.  The Trolls finished the game with Noah Miller in goal. 

The final 19 minutes were played without incident and Dordt improved to 1-0 while Trinity fell to 0-1.


-Dordt had a dominating 20-1 shots advantage and a 8-1 shots on goal edge.

-Alex Durbin had six shots and Hachaba five shots with three on goal.

-Dordt has won its season opener three of the last four seasons and is now 2-1 all-time against Trinity.

Stat of the Game

-15-30 mph.  The game was played under sunny conditions with a strong crosswind .


-Both teams face Waldorf next.  Dordt hosts the Warriors on Saturday, August 28 and the Trolls play the Warriors on Saturday, August 21 in Forest City, Iowa.
