Hastings defeats Dordt 62-31.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Hastings College scored five straight touchdowns to overcome an 11 point second quarter deficit and beat Dordt 62-31 in GPAC football played at Hastings, Nebraska on Saturday, November 7.
Hastings scored on an 11 yard pass to cap a 67 yard drive to open the scoring but Dordt answered immediately with a scoring drive capped by a Jake Brouwer 38 yard field goal with 6:43 left in the first quarter. The field goal came after Dordt had a touchdown taken away by a penalty and the Defenders were forced to settle for the field goal try. The drive also featured a 68 yard run by Xavier Caffee to help set up the score.
Hastings turned the ball over on its next two possessions—once by fumble and once by interception and Dordt took advantage with touchdowns after each turnover. Taylan Seaman ran 30 yards for a score with 2:50 left in the first quarter to finish a six play, 52 yard drive and Loken Vande Vegte scored on a five yard plunge with 11:21 left in the half for a 17-6 lead.
It was the last time Dordt would score until late in the third quarter. Meanwhile Hastings scored on drives of 67, 63 and 24 yards to finish the half.
Austin Curlee caught a five yard pass to open the scoring in the third quarter for Hastings and a 68 yard drive ended in Hastings fifth straight touchdown to take a 41-17 lead with 4:18 left in the third period.
Dordt took the ensuing possession 75 yards on ten plays and finished the drive with a Bryce Lidtka five yard run as time expired in the third period. Taylan Seaman found the end zone with 4:14 left in the game to culminate a 12 play, 81 yard drive with a five yard run after Hastings had scored two more touchdowns on runs of 60 and 70 yards.
-Dordt gained 425 yards on the ground and passed for 71. Hastings had 296 yards on the ground and 337 in the air. All totaled Dordt had 496 yards of offense and allowed 633.
-Caffee had eight carries for 84 yards and Seaman had 17 carries for 88 yards for the Defenders. Vande Vegte gained 41 yards on 17 rushes and Keithen Drury had four carries for 61 yards including a 31 yard run. Bryce Lidtka ran 12 times for 58 yards.
-Seaman completed six passes for 71 yards with four of his passes going to Jason Miller for 46 yards and two to Kyle Brummel for 25 yards.
-Justin Banks led the Defenders with eight tackles.
-Casey Byker had five tackles and forced a fumble for Dordt.
-James Vander Schaaf had a fumble return and Cole McClain had five tackles for Dordt. Alex Vasquez got credit for two tackles for loss.
-Jake Fowler led all players with 99 yards rushing for Hastings.
-Cruz Samaniego was 20-29 passing for 317 yards and four touchdowns for the hosts.
-Dordt is 2-8 overall and 1-7 in the GPAC and will finish the season against Dakota Wesleyan next week. Hastings is 4-5 overall and 3-5 in the GPAC.
