Nebraska Wesleyan defeated Dordt 27-14
HOW IT HAPPENED
Nebraska Wesleyan scored 17 straight points to overtake Dordt College in GPAC football on Saturday, October 17 in Lincoln.
Wesleyan scored first with a field goal with 11:10 left to cap a 12 play, 59 yard drive.
The Defenders answered immediately with a six play, 80 yard drive and ended it with a Taylan Seaman 11 yard touchdown run to make the score 7-3 going to halftime. Xavier Caffee had a 54 yard run to start the drive.
Dordt missed an opportunity earlier in the half when the Defenders moved the ball to the Wesleyan 15 yard line but a penalty on the first down play put the ball at the 30 and Dordt was unable to get close enough for a field goal attempt, eventually settling for a pass attempt on a fake field goal that came up short.
Wesleyan took the opening possession of the second half and scored on a running back pass for 31 yards. The point after was good and Dordt trailed 10-7.
Dordt embarked on a drive that started at the 11:48 mark of the third. 22 plays later the Defenders got the touchdown on a Caffee one yard run with 14:56 left in the game. Loken Vande Vegte had 13 carries on the drive.
Wesleyan employed its second trick play of the game on the next drive with a backward pass to Ryan Larsen near the sideline and he promptly found Bryce Darner racing to the end zone for a 32 yard pass.
Trailing 17-14 Dordt moved from its own 25 to the Nebraska Wesleyan 41 but a fumble on a pitch play recovered by Wesleyan put the Defenders in a bad position. Wesleyan made it a two score game with a 48 yard drive and a field goal with 2:49 after the Defenders turned it over on downs made got to the final of 27-14.
-Dordt had 284 yards on the ground and allowed 148. Dordt passed for 10 yards on two completions and didn’t complete pass until the final minutes of the game. Wesleyan passed for 231 yards and outgained Dordt 379-294.
-Xavier Caffee ran for 112 yards on 13 carries and Loken Vande Vegte had 19 carries for 90 yards.
-Bryce Lidtka had 12 carries for 43 yards and Andre Williams had five carries for 23 yards for the Defenders.
-Ben Green completed 14-20 passes for Wesleyan for 168 yards. Ryan Larsen had three catches for 35 yards and Corey Jones had three catches as well for 31 yards. Eight different players had catches for Wesleyan.
-Josiah Kotte (Dordt) had 13 tackles and forced a fumble.
-Cole McClain (Dordt) had ten tackles and Alex Vasquez (Dordt) had seven with a tackle for a loss.
-Casey Byker (Dordt) had five tackles with a fumble recovery for Dordt.
-Brandon McGill had 16 tackles for Midland while Dakota Buss, Hunter Hand and Adam Granville each had one interception.
