Aquinas used a late rally to force extra innings and defeated Dordt College 5-4 in nine innings Tuesday, March 10.<p>
Dordt scored in the first inning when Kassidy Van Voorst singled, stole second and third and came in on a throwing error by the Aquinas catcher. Both teams went scoreless in the second and Aquinas stranded two in the third inning.<p>
Dordt staked itself to a 2-0 lead when Ashton Beaird knocked in Andrea Pierce with a double. The two teams continued were scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings and Dordt plated a run in the sixth to go up 3-0.<p>An error by the Defenders opened teh door in the top of the seventh. The next two batters were retired without incident but a single got the Saints on the board. A double put runners at second and third and a single up the middle tied the game. <p>Dordt failed to score in the seventh and both teams took advantage of the international tie-breaker in the eighth (runner placed at second to start inning) to score a run each. Dordt scored its run when Ashton Beaird scored on a wild pitch. <p>Aquinas managed a run in the ninth and Dordt couldn't match it, leaving a runner at third when the inning came to an end.<p>Dordt was outhit 9-7 with Andrea Pierce and Kassidy Van Voorst each getting a pair of singles and Beaird had a single and double. Van Voorst also had a trio of stolen bases. <p>Danielle Stosuy started the game and went seven innings with eight hits allowed and struck out three. Amanda Malinowski was charged with the loss and gave up two runs. None of the Aquinas runs were earned.
