<p>The Dordt College Defender men’s cross country team plays the waiting game as they finished third at the Great Plains Athletic Conference Championship Meet on Saturday, November 8 in Mitchell, South Dakota.
The Defenders totaled 77 points, 13 behind second place finisher Northwestern and 33 points behind the champion Morningside Mustangs.
Dordt was led by Nick VanderKooi’s eighth place finish of 25:40. Stephan McNamara and Nathan Jackson finished 11th and 12th in 25:55 and 25:49 and Ryan McNamara wasn’t far behind with a 25:55 for 14th place. Dordt’s final points came from Sam Wensink with a time of 26:31 for 32nd place.
</p><p>Cristian Van Dyke and Hunter Weinert finished 37th and 39th respectively and had times of 26:39 and 26:43.
The Defenders remain in the running for an at-large invitation to the NAIA National Championships on November 22 at Rim Rock Farm near Lawrence, Kansas. Nick Vander Kooi has qualified for the National Meet while Stephan McNamara could qualify if Northwestern receives an at-large berth. The top-4 NAIA runners at the GPAC meet from teams not qualifying for the National Meet qualify as individuals. The final NAIA Cross Country Coaches’ Poll will be released on Sunday, November 9 with at-large berths awarded based on that polling.
Morningside's Jay Welp won the race in a time of 25:10.
