The Dordt College women’s cross country team opened the 2014 season with a third place finish at the Augustana Invite on Friday night, September 5 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Defenders totaled a 99, finishing behind the University of South Dakota with 66 points and Nebraska with 73. The host, Augustana, was fourth with 111 points in the 22 team field.
Dordt’s Nicole Slater ran 12th in 16:58 and Kayla Byl was 14th with a time of 16:59. Dordt’s next four runners were within ten seconds of each other with Lauren Opp running a 17:08 for 19th place. Abby De Vries, Lillie Koerner and Justin Van Zee finished 32nd, 33rd and 34th in times of 17:18, 17:18 and 17:19. Renee Buikema was not far behind and rounded out Dordt’s top seven with a 17:28 and 41st place in the 266 runner field.
USD’s Amber Eichkorn won the meet in 15:48.
The meet was a three mile event and was run under unseasonably cool conditions at Yankton Trails in Sioux Falls.
Dordt’s next competition will be September 20 at Dakota Wesleyan’s Invite in Mitchell, South Dakota.
