The Dordt College Defender volleyball team improved to 7-3 in the Great Plains Athletic Conference and 13-8 overall with a 3-0 win in Sioux Center over Morningside by set scores of 25-18, 25-19, 25-21.<p>
The Defenders never trailed in set one as they got out to a 5-1 lead but the visitors trimmed the difference to 9-7 and 15-13. A three point run by the Defenders on a pair of Morningside errors and a Brooke Wolterstorff kill. Morningside got the difference to two on two more occasions, 18-16 and 19-17 but the Defenders pulled away with a four point run. Jenna Horstman had a kill to start the run and Elizabeth Kiel followed with one of her own. Back to back ace serves by Wolterstorff finished the run and Dordt eventually won 25-18.<p>
Morningside came out firing on all cylinders in set two, building a 6-1 lead before the hosts started its comeback. Back to back kills by Horstman tied the score at 9-9. The set was tied again at 10-10 and 12-12 before three unanswered points by Dordt put them firmly in control. Two kills by Horstman sandwiched around a Morningside attack error provided the 15-12 lead. Morningside got no closer than two points down the stretch and fell 25-19.<p>
Morningside held brief, early, small leads in set three only to have Dordt put together a four point run to go from tied 5-5 to up 9-5. Wolterstorff had a kill in the run and Horstman added to her match high total with a kill in the string as well. Dordt ended up winning the set 25-21 in its first play in eight days.<p>
The Defenders hit for a .319 kill efficiency in the match with 50 kills and just 12 errors. Dordt also had 63 digs in the match that took just over an hour to play. Jenna Horstman had 16 kills and Brooke Wolterstorff 13. Haley Moss added seven and Elizabeth Kiel six. Kayla Bartman assisted on 35 kills and had four kills of her own with 12 digs. Wolterstorff had a team high 13 digs and Bartman assisted on two blocks.<p>
Morningside was limited to 32 kills and was led by Ashley Vander Stouwe with eight kills and Kecia Verburg and Kelsey Ackerman both had six kills and Katie Kuck had 19 digs.<p>
Dordt will host Hastings on Saturday with the junior varsity match starting at 3:30 and the varsity match at 5:00. Morningside is 2-7 this season in GPAC play and 15-10 overall.
