The Dordt College Defenders bounced back from a mid-match swoon to defeat no. 10 ranked Grand View on Tuesday night, September 8 in Des Moines, Iowa in non-conference volleyball. <p>
Dordt took sets one and two 25-20 and 25-17 before Grand View got rolling with wins of 25-11 and 25-17 to force a decisive set five. The Defenders used a late surge to win set five 15-12 and moved to 6-5 this season heading into GPAC play.<p>
Set one was evenly played with nine ties, the last one at 12-12. Dordt took a 15-12 lead on a kill by Heather Showers but the hosts came back to tie the set at 16-16. The Defenders regained a three point lead at 19-16 with Jenna Horstman knocking a kill down but the Vikings again staged a comeback to trail 20-19. A kill by Elizabeth Kiel got Dordt rolling again and Kayla Bartman followed with a dump shot to go up 22-19. A Viking point on a kill by Kally Frisch stopped the Defender run but Dordt scored the next three to win 25-20.<p>
Dordt trailed once in set two, allowing the first point of the set before scoring four straight. Dordt eventually built the lead to 15-9 with Bartman capping a three point run with an ace serve. Grand View narrowed the gap two one point on two occasions, 17-16 and 18-17. Dordt finished the set with all the momentum, getting a pair of Becci Madden ace serves to trigger a seven point run for Dordt to finish the set 25-17.<p>
Set three was the opposite for Dordt as they fell behind and never recovered in dropping a 25-11 decision and set four was similar with the Defenders fighting from behind the entire contest. The Defenders fell 25-16 and the hosts had all the momentum behind them. <p>
Set five had ties at 1-1 and 2-2 before the hosts went up 4-2. After trading points the Defenders fell behind 6-3 on back to back points off errors. Dordt responded with back to back kills by Elizabeth Kiel and two errors by the Vikings to take a 7-6 lead. The set was tied at 8-8, 9-9, 10-10 before a Bartman kill and another error put the Defenders up 12-10. The Vikings eventually fought back to a 12-12 tie but a Heather Showers 13-12 tie put Dordt up for good. Showers followed with another kill to get the Defenders to match point. Grand View fought off one match point but Showers got her third kill in the sequence to give Dordt the 15-12 win.<p>
Showers had 14 kills to pace the Defender attack and Brooke Wolterstorff added ten with 16 digs. Kayla Bartman put up 39 assists and added six kills and nine digs. Elizabeth Kiel had nine kills and Jenna Horstman was good for six kills. Meghan Krausman led the Dordt diggers with 20 and Becci Madden added 14. Madden and Siri Nelson each had three service aces.<p>
Dordt hit for a .171 kill efficiency and had 50 kills and 73 digs. <p>
Grand View had 61 kills with a .215 kill efficiency and was led by Kally Frisch with 17 kills and Taylor wells had 16.<p>
Dordt will face Briar Cliff on Saturday, September 13. Grand View is now 7-3.
