The Dordt College Defender volleyball team bounced back from a loss to Viterbo on Friday night to beat nationally ranked Davenport (Michigan) in the first match of the day at the Bellevue Bruin Labor Day Classic in Bellevue, Nebraska. The Defenders scored wins of 25-23, 25-23, 25-10 to move above .500 for the year.
The Defenders trailed 21-20 in set one before tying the score at 21-21, 22-22 and took the lead for good on a Davenport attack error at 23-22. An Elizabeth Kiel kill gave the Defenders a two point cushion and Jenna Horstman eventually gave the Defenders a 25-23 win with a kill.
Set two had the Defenders take the lead for early with a Haley Moss kills at 7-6 and the Defenders withstood a Davenport charge where the Panthers tied it 19-19 and eventually led 21-20. Heather Showers tied it with a kill and Jenna Horstman again evened the score at 22-22. An attack error by the Panthers followed by a Kiel kill put the Defenders up 24-22 and the teams traded points for the final of 25-23 with Horstman providing the game winner.
Dordt led start to finish in set three and won 25-10 after pushing the lead from 6-3 to 10-3 early and they pushed from in front 17-8 to 21-8 on the way to the win.
Haley Moss had nine kills and Heather Showers eight while Kayla Bartman had seven digs and 24 assists with nine digs. Meghan Krausman got to 10 digs and Siri Nelson had eight. Becci Madden and Bartman both had one ace serve.
