For the second time on Friday the Dordt College Defender volleyball team was pushed to five sets and for the second time the Defenders came away with a win over a ranked team at the ultra-competitive Biola Bash in La Mirada, California. Dordt turned away no. 17 Rocky Mountain 25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-11.<p>
Dordt overcame a 4-1 deficit in set one and took the lead for good at 5-4 on an attack error by Rocky Mountain. A Haley Moss kill pushed the Defenders ahead 12-6 and the Defenders pushed ahead 17-8 as the Defenders outscored the Bears 5-2 over the next seven points. Rocky Mountain was never able to make a serious run and Dordt went on to win 25-18.<p>
Set two had the Defenders ahead 11-8 before the Bears tied it at 11-11. Back to back service aces by Summer Jansen pushed Dordt up 14-11 after Jenna Horstman recorded a kill and Brooke Wolterstorff finished the run of four points in a row with a kill for a 15-11 advantage. Rocky Mountain proceeded to go on a scoring spree of four points in a row and eventually took the lead at 17-16. Haley Moss had an equalizing kill to tie it at 18-18 but a three point run gave the Bears some breathing room and Dordt got no closer than 22-21 before falling 25-21.<p>
The back and forth battle continued with Dordt taking an lead of 9-5 early in set three. The lead grew to 14-7 as Elizabeth Kiel recorded a kill and Dordt never led by less than four the rest of the set in winning 25-21.<p>
A four point run by the Bears in set four gave them the cushion they needed to win 25-19. The set was tied 9-9 before Rocky Mountain scored four in a row on two kills, a ball handling error and an attack error.<p>
Set five was tense through out with ties at 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8 before a Kiel kill put the Defenders ahead to stay at 9-8. A Jansen kill got the Defenders up 10-8. A Rocky Mountain kill trimmed the lead to 10-9 but back to back points by the Defenders gave them a 12-9 lead that proved insurmountable with the final of 15-11.<p>
Dordt hit .239 for the match and put away 62 kills with Jenna Horstman leading a very balanced attack with 14 kills. Brooke Wolterstorff had 12 kills and ten digs and Haley Moss had 11 kills with nine blocks (one solo and eight assists). Heather Showers had ten kills and Kiel had seven. Kayla Bartman recorded 45 assists and 15 digs while Meghan Krausman had a team high 17 digs and three ace serves.<p>
Dordt is 2-2 after facing four nationally ranked opponents on Thursday and Friday. The Defenders will next play four matches on August 29 and 30 at the Bellevue Classic at Bellevue, Nebraska.
