The Dordt College Defender football team won its first game of the season with a come from behind win in Ellendale, North Dakota against Trinity Bible College. Dordt trailed 14-0 but scored 37 unanswered points to take an eventual win of 37-20.<p>
The Defenders were ignited by two big plays early in the third quarter to turn a 14-10 halftime deficit into a 22-14 advantage. Trinity Bible struck early with a pair of big plays, scoring on a flea flicker at the 11:23 mark of the first quarter as Tanner Twigg found Barry Bighorn for a 55 yard pass completion after Dordt turned the ball over on downs. <p>
Dordt was unable to sustain drives on its ensuing possessions and Trinity Bible got a 30 yard pass from Trevor Taylor to Roycen Routte for a 14-0 lead with 4:19 left in the first quarter. The hosts wouldn’t score again until the fourth quarter. <p>
Meanwhile, Dordt got on the board with a Kevin Giese 33 yard field goal at the 11:35 mark of the first half and the Defenders cut the gap to 14-10 with Taylan Seaman keeping it himself on a seven yard run. The drive was initiated by a punt for negative yardage by the Lions into a stiff breeze. The drive covered 12 yard and concluded with 6:05 left in the half and was the final score of the half.<p>
A defensive touchdown ignited the Defenders in the second half as Camren Pitre stepped in front of a pass against the grain and returned it 49 yards for a touchdown just over a minute into the second half. Trinity Bible was unable to move the ball and was forced to punt and Daniel Fennig took a misdirection handoff for a 60 yard score for the 22-14 lead. Dordt got some breathing room later in the quarter when Ken Lewis raced in for an eight yard run to cap a six play, 81 yard drive. <p>The Defenders added a touchdown for insurance with 14:09 left in the game as Seaman capped the drive with a two yard run. JT Teixeira’s fumble recovery and return to the 21 yard line set up the short scoring drive.<p>
Trinity Bible score with 6:01 left in the game and threatened again late but Matt Albert had an interception in the end zone to shut the door.<p>
Dordt ran for 334 yards and was led by Seaman’s 153 yards on 23 carries and Fennig ran for 95 yards on seven carries. Loken Vande Vegte had 14 carries for 63 yards. Jason Miller had three catches for 28 yards.<p>
Trinity Bible’s Trevor Taylor was 22-46 passing for 212 yards and Bighorn caught five passes for 94 yards.<p>Dordt’s defense limited Trinity Bible to 65 rushing yards on 42 carries. Teixeira had eight tackles and forced two fumbles with a recovery and 2.5 sacks. Zlex Vasquez had eight tackles and Vanoy Harris had eight tackles as well.<p>
Dordt is 1-5 overall and 0-4 in the GPAC and resume conference play on Saturday, October 18 against Nebraska Wesleyan. Trinity Bible is 2-6.
