The Dordt College Defender football team went on the road and lost a 38-14 contest with Concordia in Seward, Nebraska. The Defenders cut the lead briefly to 14-7 with a punt return touchdown but the Bulldogs used a punishing ground game to control the ball and the clock on the way to their third win of the season.<p>
Concordia scored on a three-play, 61 yard drive with 8:56 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead. Concordia’s Von Thomas scored from five yards out to cap the drive. Bryce Collins scored at the 2:39 mark to finish a 12 play, 54 drive and the score stood 14-0 entering the second quarter. <p>
Dordt took advantage of a Concordia miscue to get on the board as a line drive punt into the wind by the Bulldogs traveled just five yards and Markeis Goodman picked it out of the air and raced 50 yards for the score and Dordt trailed 14-7 with 14:37 left in the half.<p>
Concordia embarked on a 5:08 drive that covered 78 yards and 12 plays for a 21-7 lead with Thomas finding Jared Garcia in the back corner of the end zone. Garcia came down with the ball after it looked like Dordt’s PJ Trammell had broken up the play. Concordia capped the first half scoring as Collins got in from seven yards out.<p>
Leading 28-7 at halftime, the Bulldogs played keep away in the second half, scoring on drives that took 5:28 and 9:10 off the clock to lead 38-7. Dordt scored its second touchdown on a Taylan Seaman to Xavier Caffee pass that ended up covering 60 yards for the 38-14 final.<p>
Concordia had the football for 41:34 of the possible 60 minutes. Dordt had 122 yards of offense with 94 in the air. The Defenders were limited to 28 yards rushing. Concordia ran for 327 yards and passed for 221.<p>
Seaman was 6-12 passing for 94 yards with Caffee grabbing two passes for 59 yards. Trai Pickney had two catches for 23 yards. Caffee also ran for 29 yards on eight tries. <p>
Concordia got 157 yards rushing from Bryce Collins and James Ferguson ran for 49 yards on four carries. Von Thomas was 21-31 passing with two touchdowns and four carries for 27 yards. Thomas passed for 216 yards and nine different Bulldogs caught passes with a long of 20 yards.<p>
Cole McClain had nine solo and seven assisted stops and Camren Pitre had nine and four. Vanoy Harris made 10 solo tackles with two assist and had three tackles for loss. <p>
Zach Jackson had three solo tackles and two assisted stops.<p>
Dordt is 0-5 overall and 0-4 in the GPAC and will face Trinity Bible in Ellendale, North Dakota on Saturday, October 11. Concordia improves to 3-2 overall and 2-1 in the GPAC.
