The Dordt College football team played Briar Cliff to a 14-14 halftime tie but the visitors from Sioux City used a punishing ground attack to take a 35-20 win in Sioux Center on Saturday, September 27.<p>
Briar Cliff used a long return of the opening kickoff to threaten early, but the Charger defense was held to three plays and a field goal try that the Chargers missed after the drive stalled at the Dordt six after starting at the Defender 12. <p>
Briar Cliff missed another field goal after a 15 play, 62 yard drive ended at the Dordt 10. Dordt made the Chargers pay for their missed attempts by scoring on the next possession. A Taylan Seaman to Trai PIckney 65 yard pass play put the football at the Briar Cliff 15 and Xavier Caffee eventually scored on an 11 yard run with 3:15 left in the first quarter. <p>
Briar Cliff came away empty on its next drive as well, turning the ball over on downs at the Dordt 35. Dordt was forced to punt on its next possession and Briar Cliff evened the score with Mitch Heikes get the call on third and 11 from the Dordt 20 and he went in for the score and the 7-7 tie with 8:27 left in the half.<p>
Seaman found Jason Miller for a 36 yard pass on the next possession that set up a Dan Fennig one yard touchdown plunge and Dordt led 14-7 with 4:22 left in the half.<p>
Dordt wasn’t able to hold the lead into halftime with the Chargers handing the ball to Heikes five straight times to move the ball from the Charger 30 to the Dordt 29. Kevin Van Egdom completed a scoring strike to Fred Fields on the next play to even the game 14-14 after the extra point kick was good and the teams went to the intermission tied up.<p>
Both teams committed turnovers to start the half, Dordt on a kickoff and Briar Cliff on a punt. Dordt had to hold Briar Cliff out on a fourth down try at the 14. The ensuing possession resulted in a botched punt return that gave the Defenders the football at midfield. Dordt’s drive ended on fourth down and three at the Briar Cliff 21. <p>
Briar Cliff took its first lead of the game with a three play, 70 yard drive capped by a Van Egdom to Tyler McGhee for 56 yards at the 5:03 mark of the third quarter. After Dordt punt the Chargers scored again with Robert Wilson getting a four yard run for a 28-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. <p>
The Chargers added one more score by Wilson with 9:19 remaining in the game for a 35-14 lead. Wilson got the call from one yard out to finish a 10 play, 64 yard drive. <p>Xavier Caffee got in the end zone one more time for Dordt with 4:56 left in the game. Dordt forced Briar Cliff’s first punt of the game on the next series but was unable to move the football and Briar Cliff ran out the clock.<p>
Dordt was outgained 495-273. Briar Cliff ran for 275 while Dordt had 151 in rushing. Briar Cliff had the football for 81 plays to Dordt’s 56.<p>
Daniel Fennig ran for 58 yards for the Defenders on 14 carries and Trai Pickney had seven carries for 56 yards. Taylan Seaman was 4-15 passing for 122 yards. Jason Miller had three catches for 47 yards and Pickney had two catches for 75 yards.<p>
Heikes ran 37 times for Briar Cliff and had 190 yards and Robert Wilson had 15 carries for 65 yards. Eight different players had a catch for Briar Cliff with Bret Van Muyden grabbing three for 47 yards and Van Egdom had 220 yards passing.<p>
Dordt’s defense was led by Vanoy Harris with 11 solo and 11 assisted tackles and Cole McClain had seven solo and two assisted stops. <p>
Briar Cliff’s EJ Olszewski had six solo and one assisted tackle.<p>
Dordt is 0-4 overall and 0-3 in the GPAC while Briar Cliff is 1-3 and 1-2. Dordt will travel to Concordia on Saturday, October 4 in its next contest.<p>
