The Morningside Mustangs flexed their muscle in the second half of their GPAC contest with the Dordt Defenders on Saturday night in Sioux City, Iowa. The hosts pulled away from a 24-2 halftime lead to score 48 points in the second half for a 72-2 final.<p>
Morningside scored first when a fumbled punt return led to a short field for the Mustangs and they eventually kicked a 28 yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. Brandon Wegher ran 51 yards for a touchdown the next time Morningside had the ball and made the score 10-0. <p>
Dordt’s points came on a safety when Decker was unable to flag down an errant snap on a punt until it got to the end zone and he stepped out of the back of the end zone giving Dordt two points.<p>
Wegher capped a six play, 59 yard drive with a two yard plunge with 13:38 left in the first half for a 17-2 lead. Neither offense moved the ball much the rest of the quarter until Morningside scored on a six play, 59 yard drive with under a minute left to take a 24-2 lead.<p>
The Mustangs scored four more times in the third on drives of 63, 76 and 65 yards and they scored on a 75 yard fumble recovery and return. Drives of 56, 66 and 66 yards in the fourth quarter made the final 72-2.<p>
Dordt was outgained 684-47 with Morningside getting 412 yards on the ground. Dordt was never able to establish a running game as the Morningside defense limited Dordt to two yards. <p>
Zach Barker was 6-10 passing for 45 yards with two completions each to Trai Pickney and Jason Miller for 22 and 25 yards respectively. Pickney had five kick returns for over a 30 yards per return average. <p>
Morningside got 210 yards rushing from Wegher and Nathan Gilligan ran 10 times for 128 yards. Wegher scored twice and Gilligan once. Ryan Kasdorf was 13-19 passing for 183 yards and two touchdown passes. Devin Thomas caught six passes for 125 yards and a touchdown while Jason Vander Kooi had three catches for 30 yards and Wegher had three catches for 20 yards.<p>
Cole McClain led the Dordt defense with seven solo and four assisted tackles and Vanoy Harris had six and five. Anthony Suruor had five solo tackles with six assists and had two tackles for loss and he had a fumble recovery.<p>
Zac Schleuger had five solo tackles and four assisted stops and was in on five tackles for loss. <p>
Dordt is 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the league. Morningside entered play no. 2 in the country and is 3-0 overall and 2-0 in the league and will have next week off. Dordt hosts Briar Cliff on Saturday, September 27 at 1:00.<p>
