Early turnovers spelled trouble for the Dordt College Defender football on in its season opener on Saturday night, September 6 in Sioux Center, Iowa. The Defenders lost a 41-7 decision to Dakota State to fall to 0-1 this season.<p>
Dordt moved the ball into Dakota State territory on its first drive but an interception returned to the Dordt six yard line gave the Trojans a short field to work with and Dakota State capitalized with a touchdown pass from Justin Summers to Austin Opdahl on third and goal from the six for a 7-0 lead with 11:31 left in the first quarter.<p>
The two teams exchanged punts and Dordt again moved to Dakota State territory but the Trojans forced a fumble and tok over at their own 46. Dakota State needed just three play to score, getting a pass completion from Summers to Zach Ely to cover 46 yards and the score. <p>
The Trojans scored three times in the second quarter on drives of 80, 64 and 44 yards to take a 31-0 lead at halftime. The Trojans added to the lead with a Summer three yard plunge.<p>Dordt got on the board with an 88 yard drive that took 15 plays to complete and was capped by a Taylan Seaman to Jason Miller ten yard pass with 4:09 remaining. Dordt was helped on the drive by a roughing the passer call against Dakota State when Cole McClain scrambled after an errant snap on a field goal attempt. The penalty resulted in a first down and Dordt eventually scored.<p>
Both teams had 17 first downs with the visitors outgaining Dordt 298-246. Dordt ran for 105 yards to 143 for Dakota State. Dordt was hampered by four interceptions and on fumble lost while Dakota State had one fumble lost. <p>
Daniel Fennig ran for 71 yards on 17 carries and Trai Pickney had 33 yards on seven rushes. Taylan Seaman played the second half and had six carries for 25 yards. Zach Barker was 9-15 passing for 104 yards and Seaman was 5-14 for 37 yards. Jason Miller caught six passes for 52 yards and Pickney had three catches for 55 yards. <p>
Dakota State’s rushing attack was led by Jabree Shorter with 87 yards on nine rushes and Jeremy Christner had seven runs for 40 yards. Kamarri Watson ran ten times for 40 yards. Summers completed 8-10 passes for 157 yards and Brendon Waldner caught three passes for 48 yards while Zach Ely had two catches for touchdowns of 50 and 46 yards.<p>
Cole McClain had seven solo and one assisted tackle and a fumble recovery. Alex Vasquez had four solos and two assists with a sack. Vanoy Harris had three solo and three assisted stops and had a quarterback sack and Lenard Manuel had two sacks and Ben Bajema had a sack and a half.<p>Cole Potter and Austin Ross each had six solo tackles and Ross had two interceptions.<p>
Dordt is 0-1 and will face Midland on the road in Fremont on Saturday, September 13 at 1:00. Dakota State improves to 2-0.
