<p>The Dordt College Defender track and field team sent four relays to the Drake Relays on Friday, April 25 in Des Moines, Iowa. The men’s 4 x 800 and women’s 4 x 400 qualified for the NAIA National Championship meet in Gulf Shores, Alabama in late May with their performances while the medley team set a new school record, battering the previous mark by 30 seconds.
The distance medley of Justine Van Zee, Katie Bonnema, Kayla Byl and Abby De Vries ran the race in a time of 11:58.75 for 8th place while Augustana (South Dakota) won the event in 11:32.87. Bonnema later ran the 4 x 400 anchor, helping the quartet of Siera Wilgenburg, Marisa Broersma and Robyn Blount to a time of 3:52.65 for 19th place while Wayland Baptist (Texas) had the fastest time of 3:43.46 in the qualifying heats. The time met the qualifying standard of 3:55 needed to qualify for the NAIA National Meet.
The men’s 4 x 800 ran a 7:38.29 which was good for 6th place with Oklahoma Baptist winning the event in 7:32. Dordt’s foursome was comprised of Sam Wensink, Stephan McNamara, Tim Bierma and Trent Kischer. Dordt’s time was better than the needed 7:45 for automatic qualifying.
The women’s 4 x 100 ran a :49.46 to start the day with Sarah Faber, Marisa Broersma, Kelli Boer and Robyn Blount taking the baton around. Wayland Baptist was the winning team with a time of :46.48.
Several Dordt runners were scheduled to compete at the Kip Janvrin Invite at Simpson this evening.
Dordt will have the women’s sprint medley, men’s sprint medley and the women’s 4 x 800 running at Drake on Saturday, April 26.<br /></p>
