The Dordt College Defender softball team lost a 5-1 verdict in game two of their doubleheader with Morningside on Wednesday night in Sioux City, Iowa. The Defenders were shutout until the seventh inning when they averted the shutout with a run.<p>
Morningside scored two in the first and two more in the fifth inning when the Mustangs scored a pair of unearned runs. Morningside again made the most of Dordt miscues in the sixth inning when it tacked on another run for a 5-0 lead.<p>
Dordt broke through with a run in the seventh when Erica White doubled and with two outs Michal Hoogland doubled her in.<p>
Dordt was outhit 7-4 and committed four errors that led to three unearned runs. Hoogland had two doubles for Dordt and Erica White had her double. Jayden Smolders also had a single.<p>
Haley Fligge took the loss as Dordt slipped to 0-2 in the league and 4-16 overall. She allowed seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Kay Salonen earned the win for the Mustangs with eight strikeouts and four hits allowed and no walks. The Mustangs are now 2-0 in the GPAC and 8-6 overall. Dordt will host Dakota State on Friday night in non-conference play.
