The Dordt College baseball team ended its Arizona trip with a 4-3 loss to Central (Iowa) on Friday, March 14. The Defenders allowed a run in the eighth inning that broke a 3-3 tie.<p>
Dordt got two runs in the second inning when Jon Holwerda grounded out to the right side of the infield that scored Aaron Parks and Dane LePlatt tripled in Andy Kollbaum. <p>
Central came back with three runs on three hits. Dordt got out of the inning with no more damage being done as the Defenders turned a double play to finish the frame.<p>
An Aaron Parks triple led off the fourth inning and Kollbaum followed with a double to tie the game. Kollbaum advanced to third on a ground out but was thrown out trying to score later in the inning on an infield grounder. <p>Dordt had a chance to take the lead with a hit and two stranded in the seventh leaving the score tied 3-3. Central broke through in the eighth to score the winning run. After a fly out and a strike to lead off the inning, the Dutch got back to back walks, followed by two hit batsmen that got the eventual winning run across. <p>Dordt threatened again in the ninth when Dane LePlatt doubled to lead off the inning. Anthony Maule sacrificed LePlatt to third and LePlatt was thrown out at home trying to score on the play. <p>Dordt outhit the Dutch 9-7. Le Platt, Kollbaum and Cameron Gingerich all had two hits and Nathan Fraley, Jake Thayer and Aaron Parks all had one hit. <p>Ben Van Kekerix started the game and went six innings and allowed three runs--two of them earned and struck out six with three bases on balls. Jeremy Engbers struck out one and walked two with a run allowed and took the loss in one inning of work.
